The book, which is aimed at children of Sunday-school age, was written by Father Charles Odira with additional input from Barasa Wafula of the Kenya Organisation for Environmental Education (KOEE) and support from ARC.
Parents and children in rural and urban areas in eight Kenyan dioceses were asked for their views on the content as were catechists, priests and nuns who work with young people.
The result is a bright and cheerful book with activities, prayers and short passages from the Bible for children to learn by heart. The ten chapters focus on environmental subjects including land, water, trees, animals, fish and birds.
'The book inspires children
to ask questions and find solutions' – Fr Charles Odira
Fr Odira said: ‘Key members of the Catholic faith at grassroots were invited to the launch of the book and participants referred to it as “simple, child- friendly, colourful and faith-inspired”. It will help children to grow up protecting their environment as a way of honouring God. To educate them is to educate the whole generation of people.
‘The book will benefit millions of members of the Catholic congregation. Parents are already realising the impact of the book and children are taking interest in it. The book inspires children to ask questions and find solutions on their own. At least 26 Sunday school teachers have been trained to use the material and this will continue.’
Children And God’s Creation was published in October 2014 and presented to the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops the following month.
This is the third book for use within the Catholic Church in Kenya that ARC has supported. Stewardship Of God’s Creation aimed at seminarians and Caring For God’s Creation, written for all ages and especially catechists, were also both published in 2014.
