Every year, Greening Friday is held on the second Friday of Ramadan. The day was initiated by Hajjat Aphwa Sebyala who co-ordinates Greening Friday on behalf of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council. This Greening Friday was the fifth celebration.
It began with a special Friday sermon dedicated to conserving the environment. It was heard by around 20,000 people who attended Friday prayers and also broadcast live by Salaam TV and Birali Radio. Around 10 media houses attended the event.
He also called on all District Kadhis, Twale Sheikhs and Imams to champion tree planting programmes in their areas. "The UMSC has a lot of land in different parts of the country; use some of it to plant trees so that our environment is not destroyed by global warming."
A total of 4,000 trees were distributed, of which 1,000 came from the Uganda Muslim Women Association's nursery beds and 3,000 from the National Forestry Authority. Gomba Women Environment Group and others also displayed their products.
